Hollywood, CA (July 8th, 2009)— After many months of great anticipation, the racy and funny film NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING will finally make its world premiere. The setting in which it is doing so has many talking, as NBTW becomes the first full-length feature to ever premiere at the prestigious HollyShorts Film Festival (HSFF), a festival that, as its name suggests, is traditionally where the biggest short films in the world premiere.

The buzz around the film revolves around the topic of the film itself. NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING portrays a realistic look into what occurs at a bachelor party and how the celebration of a man’s “last night of freedom” can ultimately become the demise of his beginning. Film reviews have commented how this film has been able to set aside the “indie” judgment and make its way to the viewer’s eyes as a movie of great thought, superb plotline and strong realism. It is with that realism in mind that Branin decided to cast La’rin Lane, a real life porn star, as herself. Jamin Winans INK set to Open in Denver 3/13/09

This magnificent film is now poised to open in two days in Denver, CO. My encouragement to anyone reading this who is going to be anywhere near Denver from 3/13/09 to 3/27/09 is you have to get out and see this film in the theater. It will be well worth your time. This film is building positive reviews across the board and is destined to gather a huge cult following.

INK premieres in Denver, CO this Friday, March 13th at the Starz FilmCenter at the Tivoli and will play through March 27th.

My short film "Shoot-Out" now available in it's entirety

At the persuasion of close friend Brian Erzen, I have decided to release the full version of my short film Shoot-Out online.

This film represents a lot to me. It is my first scripted effort. Every film I did before Shoot-Out didn't have an exact script. They were outlined improv pieces. And other than Night Before the Wedding, this is the only other film that we had a production budget for. It's also my first film to be accepted into a Film Festival and win an award. All told it was accepted into over 20 International Film Festivals.

The film stars Tyshawn Bryant and Daniel Sol. These guys put a lot of work in with me making this film. I don't know how many days it was, but there was quite a bit of rehearsal for this little short film. Including at least two days of choreographing parts of the basketball action. Not to mention that the filming of this short took place during extremely hot days in July and August in Porter Ranch, CA which has it's share of brush fires.

Allow me once again to thank my extraordinary crew on this one, Ivan Vatez Rodriguez the Cinematographer. Andy Brennan the 1st AD for holding things together. Jesse Pinder for Production Sound Mixer and Boom Mic Operator. Key Make-Up Artist, Keith Beck. Editor and Sound Designer Damon Stout. Jamin Winans releases 2nd Trailer for INK

As you may or may not know, I have interviewed Filmmaker Jamin Winans twice over at my Film Synergy Blog (here is the "INK" Interview). It was from the interaction back and forth on this second interview where I learned that Jamin's 2nd Feature INK was going to have it's World Premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

My fiance Karen and I made the trip up to Santa Barbara to support Jamin and see his latest work. Though the first trailer for INK is amazing, there is no way I could anticipate the impact that his film had on me and on Karen. It caused me to write this blog, Jamin Winan's INK is one of the most inspiring films I have seen...

Upon reading my write-up, Jamin said he was speechless.

Well, now Jamin has released his 2nd Trailer for INK, and he has taken MY QUOTE on his film and put it in the Trailer. Now I am the one who is speechless.

As if you didn't already need to see this 2nd Trailer anyway, now there is additional incentive.

Jamin recut the trailer because they were getting a lot of feedback that it was playing like a Horror film, which it is not. So this trailer gives us more of the overall vibe. He also told me that he has cut 9 minutes down on the overall run time. Not that the version I saw dragged by any means. But I believe that only can help the overall film.

Man, I cannot wait to see INK again!

Well the good new is that it is not too late, though the window is beginning to close.

Here’s the overall update on our first feature film, “Night Before the Wedding.” This film is one that we have been working on since September 2007. We have put in a lot of energy and effort to see our dream of completing this first feature film.

We are proud to say that we are almost there having achieved picture-lock last week. That means all that remains is color correction, sound design and music. The credit roll at the end of the film will be finalized as well. We are aiming to have this work done by March.

We initiated a ‘Pre-Order’ DVD campaign before we shot the film. Those who are showing support and faith in our project, we are rewarding by thanking them in our film’s credits and on our website (which we are redesigning).

Interview with 'Ink' Filmmaker Jamin Winans

On this awe-inspiring inauguration day where many of us feel a new hope, I am proud to unveil this new interview with a filmmaker that I admire, an artist who is passionate about his craft, and one who raises the bar for all of us in the world of independent cinema.

Jamin Winans has just completed his second feature film, Ink, a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Action Thriller about the people who come out at night and give us dreams and nightmares. It is the allegorical story of good and evil and those trapped in between. No matter how safe you feel, evil may find you. But no matter how far you've fallen, redemption is possible. Filmmaker Jamin Winans on the set of Ink

Tell us one thing about yourself that no one really knows?

I really wanted to be a ventriloquist for most of my childhood, but I found filmmaking was a lot more versatile. No joke, I collected 5 or 6 very sophisticated ventriloquist dolls and got pretty good at it. Retired around 10 or 11 years old…okay, it was last week.

Are there any books you consider invaluable to your process as a writer and director?

Reading books and interviews of other filmmakers in general has been really helpful psychologically. They remind you that everyone struggles and that you’re not alone. My all time favorite is of course Rebel Without A Crew by Robert Rodriguez. It’s just a reminder that anything’s possible.

What area of filmmaking do you feel filmmakers often overlook? Something that comes back to bite you in the ass if you aren't careful?

From a technical standpoint, sound is often overlooked, but yet extremely important. I would argue that good sound is almost more important than a good picture. For some reason we’re a lot more annoyed when something isn’t audibly clear or strong. Yet new filmmakers almost always underestimate this.

But from a thematic standpoint, story is really overlooked. A film can be phenomenal from a technical standpoint, but if the story just isn’t strong, it’s all for nothing.

There is the creative side of film and there is the business side of film. From developing the idea, to final cut of the film, to getting people to be interested in your project and having them pay to see it, which has been the toughest phase for you?

Sadly, it’s all very hard. I think production itself is probably the hardest on me because of the ticking clock and overwhelming pressure. There’s a constant sense that any one mistake will ruin your film, which is sometimes true. Once the film is in the can, it’s definitely easier to relax, but I can’t say I never feel a real sense of contentment.

Often times in the independent movie world, we see a filmmaker make his first feature film, then we never hear from him again. What is your reaction to that?

More power to them. Filmmaking is a horrible endevour with varying degrees of pain and humiliation. The glamorous perception of filmmaking is nothing like reality, especially indie filmmaking. It requires unreal perseverance and huge sacrifices. I think a lot of filmmakers just realize they would rather actually live life than go through that process again. If I didn’t feel so compelled to keep going no matter what the cost, I would easily walk away and do something else.

Congratulations on completing your second feature film. What were some of the lessons you learned in making your first feature film that you carried over into the making of your second feature?

Thanks! I’m sure there were a lot of bits of wisdom I took from the 11:59 (my first feature) filmmaking process, but the most I learned was in the distribution process. Going through distribution, you realize how shady the industry really is. There’s countless bloodsuckers out there just waiting to take advantage of new filmmakers who are desperate for distribution. There are producer reps who will take advantage of you and there are distributors who will never pay you. I’ve found that shady distributors are almost the norm. Filmmakers have to talk to each other and check references on anyone they deal with. That’s the only way to avoid being screwed no matter how big and successful the film.

Taking a moment to reflect on both of your professional features, which of the two was harder to make, the first or the second? Why?

Ink, the second film, was definitely the hardest. We shot 11:59 in about 30-35 days, but Ink was 83 days. My feeling going in was that it would be so nice to have all that extra time to really shoot what I wanted, but it turns out Ink was so logistically complicated, it still didn’t feel like enough time. And shooting that long with such a small budget becomes a test of sheer will to just keep going. I was dying after day three and I realized I still had 3 months to go. Some of the crew started falling apart and people were getting pissed. It was hard physically, mentally, but most of all emotionally.

Was it easier to raise money for "Ink" with your proven track record of quality films and a successful feature already in the books?

It was easier. 11:59 helped a lot, and to my surprise our short, Spin helped a lot as well. We met a lot of people and made a lot of good friends on the path of those two films. A few of those people really supported us on Ink from the get go. It was still a task, but we weren’t looking for too much money, which certainly makes it easier.

How did you go about financing Ink?

We wrote a business plan and really thought through the film’s marketable attributes. We talked to our friends and contacts we had made from the other films and about half a year later, we had enough money to go.

The most important thing we did was set a date and commit to shooting the film no matter what. If we couldn’t get any money, we would shoot the film with a camera, no lighting and no crew. As it turned out, we did get a little money, and that just made the film a little easier. But committing to do it no matter was the key. When people know something is going to happen with or without their help, they’re more confident about getting involved.

With "11:59" you said it was tough on you because it didn't fit into one genre. It had a bit of everything. Looks like "Ink" is a clear cut Sci-Fi/Action/Thriller. Was this a conscious decision?

Ink is actually a hybrid of genres too, but it’s a lot more marketable than 11:59. It has a lot of action and suspense, but there’s also a deeper dramatic story at the root.

Ink was already in the works before 11:59 was out, so it didn’t really influence the decisions I made regarding story and genre. Regardless, I’m happy it is what it is because it’s already been an easier path than 11:59 on the festival and distribution route.

How long did you work on the script to Ink? What was the process like? What was the germinating seed? What was it about this story that drove you to make this film?

The story of Ink was in my head for years. It was all based on a creature I was convinced I saw in my bedroom when I was about four years old. After completing 11:59 I knew I wanted to tackle a more extravagant fantasy film, but I wanted to approach it in a grittier and more authentic manner than anything I had seen in regards to fantasy/sci-fi. I started with the memory of the creature in my bedroom and branched off into an idea of people who give us dreams and nightmares while we sleep. Thematically I was really interested in the idea of redemption and that became the core in which the story was built around.

I outlined the story heavily over the course of about a year. Ink has a very complicated structure and an unformulated build, which is always risky. So during the outlining and early drafts I focused more on structure than anything else. I probably went through six or seven drafts of the script before I really had the characters fleshed out. My wife and producer, Kiowa Winans and the lead actor, Chris Kelly, were really helpful with feedback and suggestions as I moved through the drafts.

Not only did you Write and Direct Ink, you also serve as Composer and Editor. Which of these is the most fun for you? Which is the toughest?

I would say both are the most enjoyable parts of the filmmaking process. Editing is really rewarding because you’re seeing the story and all the hard work coming together. Composing is probably the most fun because it’s something I don’t take very seriously. I never set out to be a composer and I’ve accepted I’m sort of a hack, so I haven’t ruined the process by trying to be perfect at it.

What was the most challenging thing you had to face with this project?

The fear that I was somehow making something totally ridiculous and didn’t know it. It wasn’t until the last leg of the edit that I felt entirely confident with what we had created. We took a lot of risks and when you do that, you can bomb really hard.

What did you love most about being involved with this production?

It was a real team effort with my wife. We struggled a lot, but we struggled together which turned out to be a great thing.

You have released a kick ass HD Trailer for Ink, but what we really want to know, is the full length film better than the trailer?

I appreciate you saying so. It’s tough to compare a trailer to a film. One is an advertisement and one is a story. So the question really is, “Does the trailer represent the film accurately?” I would say it’s about 80 percent accurate. The feedback I’ve heard on the trailer is that it’s reading more horror/scary than I would like. The film does have it’s very dark elements, but it’s a dark modern fantasy, not a horror movie.

Personally, the film plays a lot stronger for me than the trailer because it’s much more complex, emotional, and rich. The trailer shows just a fraction of what the story actually is. But it will be up to the viewer to decide.

What are you hoping audiences take away from this film?

I hope they walk away thinking about the power of humility.

What are your goals for Ink?

I would love to make our investors money back and I would love for the right people to see the film. Beyond that, I’m happy with anything.

Will you share this film with your Mom?

Absolutely. There’s a lot of bad language in the film, but she forgives me for that.

What does this film have that you will not find in a big Studio release?

A story you won’t be able to predict the ending to in the first 20 minutes.

What makes this a 'must see' movie?

It’s totally unique, it’s moving, and it offers perspective on your dreams and the possibility of unseen influences in our lives. Well, that and there’s some guy with a huge nose running up an invisible staircase.

Filmmaker David Branin writes about Jamin Winans 'Ink'

Where do I even begin? I hope you follow along because Jamin Winan’s, Ink, is one of the most inspiring films I have seen and I am excited to share my thoughts about it with you.

As I begin to write this, please note that I am not a Film Critic. I am just a Film Fan as well as a Filmmaker. I am a growing storyteller also, so please allow me set up the story which will help me convey my full thoughts to you.

Back in 2005 I came across Jamin’s short film Spin. I can’t remember exactly how I came across it but I thought it was one of the more creative and just plain cool shorts I have seen. I wanted to know more about the film and the filmmaker so I contacted Jamin and ended up doing an interview with him through my Film Synergy blog (Interview with Filmmaker Jamin Winans)

I thought it was a great interview and I liked Jamin’s style of filmmaking so I continued to monitor his work. Now this will probably get me in trouble, but I believe it is important for me to mention. As I have studied films in the indie world, I got around to seeing Jamin’s first feature film, 11:59. Though that movie does finish strong, I came away feeling let down. It’s not anything I am going to dwell on here. Yet there may be others out there who may read this who have seen 11:59 and may not be willing to give Ink a chance and I am here to let you know that would be a big mistake.

David Branin Launches Film Courage Blog

Why this blog? Why now? The answer. My film career is at the crossroads. We will soon discover together what lies ahead. I debated what to call this blog for about a week now. No idea seemed to be right. Just moments ago, the words Film Courage popped into my head, and now this blog has begun. I owe inspiration for the title of this blog to a brilliant and talented actor friend of mine who is as passionate about his craft as anyone I know.

I dedicate my journey and this blog to all kindred creative souls. For the sacrifices, the daily rejection, the criticism and judgment. May we have it within ourselves to create our own magic to move mountains.

My Apologies to My Readers

I haven't updated this blog for many weeks.

The focus of this blog for years has been on the works of David Branin under my company Dream Regime Productions. A couple things have happened. One, my first feature film Night Before the Wedding has been made under another company's umbrella, Glimpse of Dreams, LLC.

In addition, I have decided to chronicle my film journey in a more personal way which led me to creating the blog Film Courage. I have spent more time building that blog and contributing to it's growth. I am probably going to incorporate some of my Film Courage blogs into this Dream Regime Blog from this point forward.

And of course behind the scenes, I have been working diligently to finish my aforementioned first feature film.

I want to apologize to those of you who check in here regularly looking for updates. I encourage you to Bookmark Film Courage or maybe sign up as a 'Follower' to that blog.

And since it has taken years to build up this blog and because there are so many readers that turn here for news...I have decided that since Dream Regime Productions is David Branin, I am going to continue to post my newest news here. Expect a flurry of updates.

Film Synergy, http://filmsynergy.blogspot.com/ is announcing today that it is launching an exciting new Interview Series with various members from the Cast of Crew of the upcoming indie feature film, Night Before the Wedding. This is part of Film Synergy's initiative to provide top notch content in regards to Independent Filmmaking.

The premise of Night Before the Wedding is one that takes you inside a modern bachelor party. It's not one of those over the top raunchy comedies. Not to say that the film doesn't have a wild side.

Here's the logline: "Before straight-laced William Shay weds his soul mate, he must get through one last wild night with his best buddies…but the party quickly turns serious when he finds himself alone with a real life porn star."

The film was shot primarily in one location, a two-story house in North Hills, CA. It is an ensemble piece that features 17 actors and actresses, including a platinum selling rapper and an adult film star. The film is now in Post-Production and is expected to reach public audiences in 2009.

While the financial crisis continues on Wall Street, there is positive news to be found in our realm. Combined internet views of our 'Extended Teaser Trailer' for Night Before the Wedding has exceeded 5000 views. Not too shabby. This is great news considering we have not been able to really promote it, as we are submersed in the editing process. Coming up for air to report this news, then it is right back to editing.

The 'Teaser Trailer' does not feature one frame of footage from the film itself. So you do not have to worry about spoilers. People have asked if the film is a documentary because the 'Teaser' is shot in documentary fashion. No it is not a documentary. It is a full fledged scripted feature film. We will have an official theatrical trailer online as soon as we can. We currently have Production Stills online and we are certain to have Screenshots in the near future.

Had a wild time at the Opening Night of the 4th Annual HollyShorts Film Festival last night. Came away with some exciting moments. We got our promotional items into the hands of Paul Haggis, Josh Brolin, and Larry Hankin amongst many others.

Also spoke with the Festival Organizers Theo Dumont and Daniel Sol. They were inquiring about what I had in the works. Let them know about our upcoming Fundraising Event on Friday August 15th and how we were going to have a special screening of the 'Teaser Trailer' for Night Before the Wedding.

They made the offer to screen it tonight at Club Nacional as part of the HollyShorts Film Festival and it was an offer I couldn't turn down. Shay is joined by a group of colorful high school/college friends who congregate to celebrate his last night of freedom. The idea for NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING was hatched when Branin was approached by a friend to shoot an HD short in one location in one day. With his mind turning, and also wanting to work with several actor friends, Branin put the pieces together and pitched a bachelor party story. But because of the size and scale of the idea it wasn’t feasible to shoot it in one day. Believing he had something special, Branin pressed on, and in three weeks manifested a first draft not for a short film, but a feature film.

The film while comedic by nature, ultimately deals with the serious, life-changing moral dilemmas even the most straight-laced of us must face during this night. Both the comedy and the drama of the film hit home with equal truth and weight. We just received this video link from the folks over at HollyShorts. It is a cool recap of last year's festival where "Honey, I'm Home" was fortunate enough to receive an Audience Choice Award.

This video was filmed and edited by Daniel Mercaldi and is hosted by Damon Campbell. Cannot emphasize enough how impressed we are with this highlight video. It really captures the overall spirit and vibe that I remember from attending the fest.

It's great to see "Honey, I'm Home" represented in the video. Not only is there a small clip from the film in the video, there are also words from Director David Branin and later from Actress Karen Worden.

It has been a surprise hit for me. I made it for less than a $100, and to date it has been an Official Selection to more than 15 International Film Festivals.

"Honey, I'm Home" won the "Audience Choice Award" at the HollyShorts Film Festival (it's debut festival). It's festival selections include Miami Underground Film Festival, Festivus Film Festival, Lake County Film Festival, and the Rome Independent Film Festival.

Honey, I'm Home tackles the topic of being unfaithful and having to confess the truth to one's companion. Never before has infidelity been explored in the way you will see here.

* Inside Scoop – It was always my plan to have "Honey, I'm Home" be available for online viewing. Before doing so, I wanted to test the Festival circuit. To my thrill and delight, this little $100 movie has held up it's own against films with 100 times the budget. In addition it has won over dozens of film critics.

My goal was to add it to the site AtomFilms. After building Honey, I'm Home's resume, I thought its track record was in place for it to be accepted by AtomFilms. I was wrong. It was rejected and I was told that it is not good enough to be on their site.

Had a friend ask me the other night, "Do you ever get fired up?" He said he wanted to see me mad. I generally keep a cool demeanor, yet it does not mean that passion does not burn within me.

My standard approach is to report the positive stuff happening my films and other projects. There is no need to bash the festivals that we didn't get into and things like that.

Yet when I receive an email from yourfriend@atom.com with the subject "AtomFilms Content Removal" and the message ends with "***We're sorry, but due to the volume of submissions we're not able to respond to questions about why your film wasn't selected.***" This is something that really pisses me off.

You have to be kidding me. I do not proclaim that "Honey, I'm Home" is the greatest film in the world. Yet I can say it is a quality film with a solid track record. It was made with a microscopic budget, features a memorable performance from lead actor Jacob Magnuson, has been accepted into more than 15 International Film Festivals and won the Audience Choice Award at last year's HollyShorts Film Festival. Not to mention that the trailer for the film has been seen over 30,000 times and counting. The preview of the film on Cruxy.com (where it was uploaded in December) has over 20,000 hits and climbing.

Is AtomFilms really that great where they are going to pass on "Honey, I'm Home"? They really come off as an arrogant and smug organization. Also in the email is this sentence, "Thanks again for thinking of us and please, send more of your movies to AtomFilms! We'd love to see them."

What? You want to see more of my films after turning my film down. You can see them on other sites! I am through with AtomFilms. I believed they would have made the perfect match to be the online distributor for a film that will do very well online. They want to turn down a filmmaker who's work has been viewed millions of times on dozens of sites across the world wide web?

Yeah, I'm fired up, and I'm mad.

Now I will gladly take my film elsewhere. So far I am considering MetaCafe and Revver. Do you know of any other sites or alternatives I should explore?

Lake County Film Festival Accepts "Honey, I’m Home"!!!

I was in the middle of working on a feature story synopsis, when I received the fantastic news that "Honey, I'm Home" has been accepted into the Lake County Film Festival! Have to admit, this is a festival we did not expect to be accepted into, so this news is very well received. This makes 14 Official Selections for "Honey, I'm Home." Really happy to see our $100 film continue to win over judges and fans alike.

Even better is the way the news came about. It wasn't through email or a letter, it was through a phone call with Nat Dykeman, Festival Director of the Lake County Film Festival. To hear first hand that a Festival Director really enjoyed your film...I mean, what can I really say. It is a fantastic feeling.

I am working on making 2008 a big year (which will include my debut feature film!). While attacking this new year, I have discovered that my film, "Honey, I'm Home" was an Official Selection to the Bursa International Silk Road Film Festival which took place December 7th through December 13th, 2007 in Istanbul, Turkey. It is quite an honor that "Honey, I'm Home" was selected as they received over 400 short film submissions.

Must apologize to all my fans in Turkey who missed the screening. I was kept in the dark and was not aware it was accepted. It is tougher to find out word about International Film Festivals. As proof, I was not aware that we had been accepted into yet another International Film Festival. I did some investigating and also discovered that "Honey, I'm Home" has also been accepted into the Roma Independent Film Festival.

The festival runs from April 4th through 12th, 2008. Will keep you posted with more information as it becomes available.

Happy New Year!

It's now official, 2008 is here.

Want to start off the year with some activity. Not going to let this year slip by, so I am attacking it. (Finishing up my 4th draft of my upcoming feature film tonight and in addition shooting this video on Saturday).

Here's the deal.

I have a simple idea that I know will be funny and entertaining. I am shooting it this Saturday 1/5/08 in the Los Angeles area. Shooting will take place between 10:30am and 1pm.

This one is for males only. You do not have to be an actor, might actually be better if you aren't. Looking for guys that are energetic, passionate, and are willing to go over the top on camera.

There is no pay up front for this, yet my mindset is focused on monetary opportunities for the video. When money is made, those in the video will be paid.

Believe it will be fun for everyone involved. In the very least, I guarantee the video will be seen by thousands of people.

Accepted into the Festivus Film Festival!

We have received word from the organizers of the Festivus Film Festival in Denver, CO that "Honey, I'm Home" has made the cut. They received over 300 submissions which is amazing for their inaugural year. We are still waiting on the official announcement and for the schedule to be released which will be done soon. I can say that we are overjoyed with this selection. Really like what we have seen from Festivus thus far and we wanted to be a part of it.

The FESTIVUS Film Festival will be held in Denver, Colorado between January 11 and January 13, 2008.

Mission statement: FESTIVUS is the film fest for the rest of us. Our goal is to support and encourage awesomely badass, truly independent film. Festivus isn't for the deep-pocketed Hollywood type. 10th Official Selection for "Honey, I’m Home"!!!

We are very happy to announce that "Honey, I'm Home" has been accepted into it's 10th Film Festival. It is great to reach the double digit mark. We received official word from Jerry Kovar of the Sarasota Film Society that "Honey, I'm Home" will screen December 3rd, 2007 at Burns Court Cinemas in Brandenton, Florida at 8:30 pm as part of the Filmmakers Forum Series.

For a movie made on such a miniscule budget of under $100, "Honey, I'm Home" is showing a lot of vitality with critics and also on the festival circuit. Love to see it, as we work on getting our first feature film made. Details on that front coming in the near future.

Our video "Religious Freaks Gone Wild" continues it's run as one of the internet's most sensational videos. It's view count is somewhere in the millions. Official Selection - Peoria Film Festival

This week has been a great week for our film "Honey, I'm Home" After being notified by the Miami Underground Film Festival and the Cookies in the Mill Film and Video Festival of their acceptances earlier this week, we have just received word from the Peoria Film Festival that "Honey, I'm Home" is an Official Selection to their 2008 Festival.

Each Official Selection is very exciting news for us, as we have raised the bar to the near impossible goal of having "Honey, I'm Home" screen in all 50 states and 10 countries outside of the U.S. Each festival that accepts our film gives us hope that maybe our goal isn't impossible.

We want to make special mention and thank Festival Director Helen McCready for all the work she puts into the festival. The limited contact we have had with her has been great. For filmmakers it is great when you have access to a festival director and Helen is approachable and welcoming.

If you have been following our blog news for a while, you probably remember me mentioning during our post HollyShorts Film Festival news that I was interviewed by three different outlets. The first of those interviews has now made it's way online.

In a follow up to the HollyShorts Film Festival, I was contacted by Noralil Ryan Fores from Short End Magazine for an interview. What a blessing it is to have an interview done by a true professional such as Noralil.

She has done an excellent job piecing together this interview we conducted several weeks ago. Now you have a chance to benefit from her work and learn a little more about me.

I just want to point out to you how quickly things can change. When I was talking to Noralil, I was gearing up to make my short film, "R E F R A G M E N T E D" It is a very strong piece of writing and a film I still hope to make in the near future. Yet, since this interview I have come up with a new Feature Film idea that is coming on so fast that it is now taken precendence over all other projects which include my other planned feature film. It is an idea so fertile that it makes me wish I was going into production today on it.

Utopia Film Festival - Official Selection for "Honey, I'm Home"

"Honey, I'm Home" is an official selection to this year's Utopia Film Festival. This will be a DC-area Premiere for David Branin's short film on infidelity.

We are extremely thrilled with this selection. After being accepted into our first four film festivals and winning one Audience Choice Award, we were turned down by three straight film festivals so it feels great to have this upcoming East Coast Screening.

"Honey, I'm Home" screens Saturday, October 27 at 2:00 pm at the Greenbelt Community Center Multipurpose Room in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Jordan Allen Music Video Update

We regretfully must report to our friends and fans, Jordan Allen's friends and fans and to the hundreds of actresses who submitted to us that due to circumstances beyond our control, the making of the music video, "Extraordinary" has been indefinitely suspended.

Our deepest apologies to you. We want to reiterate that there have been some unforeseeable hurdles which keep us from moving forward at this time. If and when things change on the matter, we will let you know here.

On our front, focus has shifted to a brand new feature film idea that has manifested over the past week. It now takes priority over all other projects. We are having our first script read/collaboration this weekend and hope to gear up for production in the upcoming months. An idea for a new feature film has now taken hold. It has come on very rapidly. So much so, that is now our next priority. This new feature film moves ahead of our other scheduled projects. We are going to have our first script reading next weekend.

My name is David Branin. I am a writer/director looking to team up with a producer on an upcoming short film and potentially my first feature film. I am based in Los Angeles so I am looking for someone in the Los Angeles area.

What I am looking for - Someone who can help me make the best film(s) possible. From collaborating on story, to getting production equipment, and helping to assemble our crew. All the way through meeting deadlines and making it through post-production. And from there, getting every drop of exposure we can from our work. Would love to work with someone who not only has passion for getting the film done, but who is just as excited to promote the film, get it seen, and put us in the best position for distribution.

PLEASE NO EQUIPMENT RENTAL REPLIES.

Tarantino has his Lawrence Bender, Kevin Smith has his Scott Mosier etc. Ideally, that is what I am looking for. That is why I am putting this out to the universe. It is hard to see every project through idea to distribution. That is what I have done and continue to do. I am now leaning on you to join forces with me so we can do this together. You handle your expertise while I handle mine.

Not sure if I will find my producer this way, but I am ready to move forward. I want to see what kind of response this posting will bring me.

My films have not come with the biggest budgets. The short film I am doing next takes place in one apartment. The script is ready and ready to go. It won't cost much to do.

My feature film also takes place in one location and I am sure can be done with a miniscule budget. *Note – Just about to finish the first draft on this feature film. It's not quite there but it is getting close.

My current film, "Honey, I'm Home" was made for less than $100. It's tiny budget did not keep it from winning the Audience Choice Award at HollyShorts in its debut festival. It is now in the early stages of making its rounds on the festival circuit.

I am looking to build a professional relationship with someone who can get things done.

That's really what it comes down to. If you are interested in potentially working with me, I am sure you will do your due diligence. Google my name and research my work. Dream Regime Productions/Def Films are now taking submissions for singer/songwriter Jordan Allen's Debut Music Video.

We are seeking an actress/model between 21-30 for the lead role.

Shooting days are Monday September 10th, and Tuesday September 11th. Must be available for both days.

We would like to work with someone who is committed, responsible, and professional. Don't worry, it's going to be fun as well. We just do not want any flakes.

Audition dates are September 4th and September 6th.

There is no pay up front. Compensation will be in the form of credit and copy along with meals for each day. You will also receive your fair share of exposure. Your name and face will be put out there. We will promote you being in this video.

Do you have fun checking your email? For me there has been a lot of excitement as I open email pertaining to our latest film, "Honey, I'm Home"

I am very proud of "Honey, I'm Home" but I did not anticipate the kind of reaction we are getting for this film that we shot in five hours for less than $100. Usually this kind of praise is saved for films shot with megabudgets and contain household names.

Never did I imagine I would open an email, like the one I just received from Peter Dimako, Editor in Chief of MovieJungle.com

HollyShorts ’07 Recap

What a thrilling weekend we had at the HollyShorts Film Festival. It was a great three day event. It was capped off by our surprising film, "Honey, I'm Home" winning the Audience Choice Award for Day 2 of the festival.

The fest kicked off Friday night at Club Nacional in Hollywood with Adrian Grenier's "Euthanasia" opening the festival.

We have a lot of photos from the festival that we look forward to sharing with you. Hopefully very soon. We are waiting for the pics to come in. Once we have them, we will probably post them in a long photo blog for you.

Over the two days of the festival, it was amazing how many filmmakers attended. The list included Michael Attardi, Tony West, Justin Liberman, Jason Roberts, Alex Ferrari, Karen Dee Carpenter, Jim Grollman, Phil Allocco, Shawna Baca, Brandon Maxwell, and Leah Meyerhoff. Even with all these names, I am probably leaving over half the amount of directors that were on hand for the festival. That's a pretty powerful list of filmmakers of who have been doing big things on the independent scene.

As mentioned previously, I was interviewed by Damon Campbell who is doing a documentary on this past weekend's HollyShorts Festival. I was also interviewed by Ourstage who was the premium sponsor of the event, and I was interviewd by Steven Buchsbaum from http://www.truehollywoodtalk.com/

Sunday was a day powerpacked with films and a business superpanel who's topic was "Packaging, Promoting, Marketing and Distributing Your Project in the Digital Era" The panel was Moderated by Stuart Altman, Vice President, Film Industry Network. The Panelists: Mark Stoloraff, instructor, No Budget Film School; Story analyst for Imagine Films Entertainment, CBS, Anschultz Film Group and Participant Productions Peter Russell; Entertainment Power Lawyers Greg Bernstein, Law offices of Greg Bernstein), Paul Battista, Esq., Partner, MindFusion Law Corporation and Mychal Wilson, Esq., Partner, MindFusion Law Corporation.

The panel got pretty intense and was quite informative. It's great having nuts and bolts commentary like this within the course of the festival.

Big Announcement - News is coming very shortly about an agreement to do my first music video. The video will be produced by myself, David Branin, and Vincent Martinez. The same duo behind "Honey, I'm Home"

For those of you who attended the festival and even for those who didn't. Sunday featured almost 8 hours of short film programming. Great films from all different genres. Somehow, within all of that, our 5 minute film won over the audience. It was amazing to cap off the festival at the awards ceremony and hearing "Honey, I'm Home" being called out as the Audience Choice Award Winner. It is an honor we were not expecting. There were so many impressive films that it is hard to believe we would walk away with such recognition. We just want to say congratulations to all filmmakers on hand for putting out great work and we want to thank HollyShorts festival directors Daniel Sol and Theo Dumont for running a first-class event on all levels.

Another Official Selection

Honey, I’m Home wins Audience Choice Award at HollyShorts

I am too exhausted after this weekend to go into the full details, but "Honey, I'm Home" gains validation as the 'surprise' hit of the HollyShorts Film Festival by winning Sunday's Audience Choice Award. I am pretty shocked by it. And I feel quite honored, very fortunate.

HollyShorts Update

The HollyShorts Film Festival has been awesome the past two days! Before I get into the full update, let me just quickly remind you that "Honey, I'm Home" will have it's World Premiere tomorrow (I have begun typing this before midnight) Sunday August 12th at about 4pm at CineSpace at 6356 Hollywood Blvd. Based on today's turnout, we are going to have a packed theater at that time. Very likely going to be standing room only for a lot folks.

It was great to see Adrian Grenier at the Opening Night Reception. His short film "Euthanasia" kicked off the fest. Club Nacional was packed. The guest count was easily over 400.

The press I have been able to generate thus far from being the festival has been an added bonus. At the opening night reception, I was interviewed by Damon Campbell who is doing a short documentary on the festival. In addition to that I was interviewed on the red carpet by OurStage, who is a premium sponsor of the event and provided exclusive inside coverage of the Opening Night Party. It was a great experience and lots of fun. Both of these interviews will make their way online soon, and when they do, I will share them with you.

The festival itself today (Saturday) was tremendous. The festival directors Daniel Sol and Theo Dumont do a great job providing an intimate connection with all attending filmmakers to the event. You are not just another number or just another filmmaker. Every filmmaker who shows up is welcomed and embraced.

The highlights for me today were connecting connecting filmmakers Alex Ferrari (Broken, Cyn) and Jason Roberts (Tell-Tale). I have become familiar with Alex through his smash hit "Broken." The amount of attention he has garnered for his short film has been inspiration not only to me but to many independent filmmakers across the land. It's also cool, because my previous film "Shoot-Out" has screened at many of the same festivals as "Broken." Not only that, but his latest effort, "Cyn" made it's World Premiere today, and my latest effort, "Honey, I'm Home" will premiere tomorrow.

I wasn't familiar with Jason before today, but we crossed paths twice today and got to know each other a little. Great guy and passionate filmmaker. His work "Tell-Tale" inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's work is an impressive film. The cinematography, editing, and sound design on the film is all top notch. Our First Bad Review

Imagine you are an artist. A filmmaker, musician, actor, writer, poet, painter…whatever your art may be, once you start putting your art out to the public, you open it up to criticism.

It's not something to shy away from, it is something to embrace.

Now imagine this. A critic views your work, and let's you know up front that he isn't going to write the best review regarding your work. In other words, your creation is about to be bashed.

You have two choices, thank the critic for his time and move on. Or you can walk into the fire and welcome the criticism.

What would you do?

To our surprise, all of our early reviews of "Honey, I'm Home" have been pretty amazing. Now we were given warning, there was a bad review coming. Our first blemish. Yet we were given the choice to avoid it. How often does that happen?

Jonathan Hickman of Einsiders.com is a classy guy, extremely professional. We are big fans of his work and his opinions. We thank him for taking his time to view our latest effort and offer us his honest thoughts. No honest review is a bad review.

For us, there was no dilemma in answering the question of whether to accept the review or not. We are thankful for it.

Tony Farinella Review - “It’s a shocker, by god!”

I have a Tony Farinella story for you. He's also known as the "Bachelor Critic" and he writes for "The Comic Book Bin," among others.

I'm just not sure if I should share this story with you. I don't want to get Tony mad at me. It's the kind of story I can only share, if you promise to read this all the way through. Can you do that? All right, as long as you promise.

Keep on reading. Here is the story, a year ago I contacted Tony for a review of my short film, "Shoot-Out". His interest was piqued by my attention-grabbing query letter. (Shoot-Out has received amazing press) After reading my email he asked that I mail him a copy, which I did. His life swept him away as did mine. I never touched base with him again to follow through on the review. Needless to say, he never reviewed the film.

Remember your promise? This is the part of the story you do not want to miss. It wasn't until I started contacting critics to review my latest film, "Honey, I'm Home" that I came across Tony's name again. Maybe he did review "Shoot-Out" and I just wasn't aware of it. So I started doing some research. I couldn't find his review anywhere. Should I really bother to send him a copy of "Honey, I'm Home" I asked myself?

He deserved another chance, didn't he? I decided to go for it and contacted him to see if he would be interested in reviewing "Honey, I'm Home." Once again, my query letter grabbed his attention. He said he would certainly be interested. I planned to send him a copy, knowing that this time I would follow through with him. I even asked him if he ever reviewed "Shoot-Out." This is where it really gets good. Now you will find out why I am sharing this story with you.

Tony could have been defensive or he could have weaseled himself out of the situation. He didn't do that. He instead admitted that he had received the film, yet with his schedule and life being life, never got around to watching it. (Tony, it's still not too late to watch it) He took the honest approach.

Now I was glad that I had decided to contact Tony again. If he will be honest about not watching "Shoot-Out" and not trying to duck out of it, then I knew he was going to give his honest thoughts and feedback on any film he reviews. I just had to make sure that he would review "Honey, I'm Home."

Know what makes this story even better? I didn't need to follow through with Tony at all. He reviewed the film before I had a chance to contact him. Not only that, but we have been rewarded with an honest and awesome review.

The first trailer for Mutant Vampire Zombies From The 'Hood! had its World Premiere at Comic-Con 2007 in San Diego this past weekend. The preview screened at the conclusion of "Zombie Night", immediately following a screening of the 80's cult classic "Night of the Comet". The audience laughed and applauded and seemed quite appreciative of the brief sneak peak.

The film stars Tyshawn Bryant, Dream Regime producer and star of "Shoot-Out" along with C. Thomas Howell (The Hitcher, Soul Man, E.T.)

Brand New Review - Rogue Cinema

Making movies allows you to connect with others. One of those connections that I have made along the way has been with Duane L. Martin of Rogue Cinema who is a strong supporter of independent film. He was the first reviewer to offer his thoughts on our last film, "Shoot-Out"

He was so impressed with the film that he offered to interview the boys (David Branin, Daniel Sol, and Tyshawn Bryant) behind that project. It contains great insight and is a cool look down memory lane for those interested.

Imagine a film being made on a shoestring budget of less than $100 competing with films made for 100 times more. It is no fantasy. We have just received word that "Honey, I'm Home" has been accepted into this year's DigiFestival.net which is based in Italy! Our 1st International Film Festival.

We have just received our latest and Greatest review from The World's Greatest Critic, J.C. Macek III.

Allow us to share a story with you. When we seeking press on our previous film, Shoot-Out we contacted a slew of movie critics. We will never forget J.C. Macek's intial reply..

"It's my pleasure to review independent films, just so long as the makers respect the fact that my opinion will be honest and fair, and that it's understood that my writing style is primarily comical. In short, no hurt feelings intended."

Fair enough, as we wanted to hear what the World's Greatest had to say about our film. We figured even if he bashes our project, something good will come out of it. What was the verdict??? He loved "Shoot-Out!!!" He watched it many times over and provided us an amazing Review.

We do not bring up this story to toot our own horns, we bring it up because JC Macek III, who has seen thousands of films, is not an easy critic to please. If a film is poor it is going to be known, and if a film is great it will be praised. We love the way he writes and his comic style which leads to the question...

Emerging Artist's - Jordan Allen to perform at Kulak's Woodshed on July 26th!

Hello everyone...

We are performing at Kulak's Woodshed! It is a live acoustic music, singer songwriter listening room and pioneering multi-camera webcast recording studio. A Labor of Love created by Paul Kulak in November, 1999 operated by volunteers and funded by audience donations.

They serve no food or alcohol. The artists who perform there range from emerging independent talents to number one hit writers and Grammy winners.

It has a "living room" feel and is perfect to sit and listen to music. Coffee and tea is available ($1 donation) and parking is an absolute cinch.

I will be joined by some really talented musicians on this night, and I cannot express how magnificent this venue really is for all of us.

*Suggested donation is $5...this goes completely to support the work that Kulak's Woodshed does for independent musicians.
